Lesson 2.2: Contextual Prompting & Working with Files
In the previous lesson, we learned the “Anatomy of a Prompt.” Now, we move into one of Claude’s most powerful capabilities: Contextual Prompting. This is the process of giving Claude specific data—like a PDF, an image, or a long block of text—and asking it to work only within that information.
1. Why Context Matters
AI is general, but your needs are specific. By providing context, you prevent the AI from “guessing” or “hallucinating.”
-
Without Context: “Write a summary of my business.” (Claude doesn’t know your business).
-
With Context: “Here is my business plan (uploaded PDF). Summarize the marketing strategy for me.”
2. Using the Paperclip (File Uploads)
Claude in 2026 allows you to upload multiple files at once. This is perfect for:
-
Document Analysis: Uploading a 50-page report and asking, “What are the three biggest risks mentioned here?”
-
Data Extraction: Uploading an image of a receipt or a table and asking, “Convert this into a clean CSV format.”
-
Competitive Research: Uploading a competitor’s website text and asking, “What is their unique selling proposition?”
3. The “Grounding” Technique
To get the best results when providing context, you should “ground” Claude by telling it to stay strictly within the provided material.
Try this Prompt Formula:
“I am going to provide you with a document. Read it carefully. Your task is to answer my questions using only the information found in this document. If the answer is not in the text, simply say ‘I don’t know.’ Do not use outside knowledge.”
4. Multi-File Synergy
You can ask Claude to compare two different files. This is a “Pro” move for researchers and creators.
-
Example: Upload “Draft A” and “Draft B” of your website copy.
-
Prompt: “Compare these two drafts. Which one is more persuasive for a tech audience, and why?”

We are graduating from the basics! In Module 3: Advanced Prompting, we will explore Chain of Thought reasoning and how to make Claude solve complex, multi-step problems.
