Lesson 3.2: Tree of Thoughts (ToT) & Self-Correction
While Chain of Thought (CoT) works in a linear fashion, complex problems often require exploring multiple possibilities at once. In this lesson, we will cover two “power user” techniques that mimic how human experts solve difficult problems: Tree of Thoughts and Self-Correction.
1. What is Tree of Thoughts (ToT)?
Tree of Thoughts is a framework where the AI explores multiple reasoning paths in parallel. Instead of following just one line of thinking, the model “branches out” like a tree to consider different solutions, evaluates them, and even backtracks if it hits a dead end.
-
How it differs from CoT:
-
Chain of Thought: Follows a single path (A → B → C).
-
Tree of Thoughts: Explores multiple paths (A → B1, A → B2) and decides which one is most promising.
-
2. How to Trigger Tree of Thoughts
You can force Claude to use this method by asking it to generate and rank multiple strategies before proceeding.
The “ToT” Prompt Template:
“Imagine three different experts are solving this problem. Each expert will propose one potential step toward a solution. After they propose their steps, they will critique each other’s ideas and choose the most promising path. Continue this process until a final conclusion is reached.”
3. The Art of Self-Correction (Reflection)
In 2026, Reflection Prompting is a core technique where you ask the model to evaluate its own work before showing it to you. This significantly reduces errors and improves the tone of the output.
-
The Critique Loop: Instead of just asking for a blog post, ask Claude to:
-
Draft the post.
-
Write a short critique of its own draft (identifying what’s boring or inaccurate).
-
Rewrite the post based on that critique.
-
4. When to Use These Advanced Methods
These techniques are resource-intensive and take longer, so use them only for high-stakes tasks:
-
Creative Brainstorming: Generating multiple unique marketing angles.
-
Complex Logic/Math: Solving puzzles or technical problems where one wrong step ruins the whole result.
-
Coding: Refactoring a large codebase where multiple architectural choices are possible.
📝 Practical Activity
Task: Ask Claude to brainstorm a brand name for a new eco-friendly tech company.
Prompt: “Generate 5 different names. For each name, provide one reason why it’s good and one reason why it might fail. Finally, based on this self-evaluation, pick the single best name.“
Observe: Notice how Claude becomes more critical and delivers a higher-quality final recommendation.
